Overview
of DNA Profiling Services
Paternity, Maternity, Family Relationship,
Twin Identity Confirmation
Fairfax Identity Laboratories has extensive
expertise in a wide range of DNA profiling services. DNA
profiling permits the direct examination of the genetic material
that a child inherits from its biological parents. By comparing
the DNA characteristics of the mother and child, it is possible
to identify the characteristics that the child inherited
from the biological mother. Any remaining DNA characteristics
must have come from the biological father. If the DNA profile
from the tested man does not contain these same paternal
characteristics, he is excluded as the biological father.
If the DNA profile from the tested man is found to contain
these same characteristics, then a statistical analysis is
performed to calculate the probability of paternity, which
can be reach greater than 99.9% certainty. Paternity can
also be established in cases where the mother is not tested.
By increasing the battery of tests conducted, motherless
testing can be an informative method of examining paternity.
However, when the mother is available for testing her sample
should be included in the analysis. Similar studies can address
questions in maternal and family relationships that could
affect decisions in immigration, adoption, insurance, Social
Security benefits, and inheritance. FIL also has extensive
experience with the prenatal diagnosis of paternity.
Forensic Paternity (Sexual Assault)
Criminal cases concerning paternity involve
unlawful sexual contact resulting in pregnancy. FIL has extensive
experience in dealing with the sample types commonly encountered
in forensic paternity, including prenatal samples, autopsysamples,
autopsy specimens, and products of conception
Twin Studies
Non-identical twins make up 70% of all
twins and share half of their genes on average, just like
a brother and sister. With identical twins, all of their
genes are the same. If the twins' DNA characteristics do
not match perfectly, then they are non-identical. Because
their DNA characteristics will never change, DNA testing
can provide a way to identify identical twins throughout
their lives.
Felon Data Banking
Almost every state now has legislation
to establish a forensic data bank containing DNA profiles
from individuals involved in specific crimes. These DNA data
banks are used by law enforcement agencies to identify suspects
in criminal cases in which biological evidence is available.
Fairfax Identity Laboratories follows the guidelines of the
Technical Working Group on DNA Analysis Method (TWGDAM),
DNA Advisory Board (DAB) and Combined DNA Index System (CODIS)
standards for the acceptance of DNA at NDIS (National DNA
Index System).
Bone Marrow Analysis
Bone marrow transplantation is a medically
indicated procedure for patients with various cancers diseases.
To monitor the engraftment of donor cells following transplantation,
VNTR (variable numbers of tandem repeat) loci are analyzed
and physicians gauge relapse by comparing the percent contribution
of donor and recipient DNA in a patient sample.
Immigration Services
Individuals and families interested in
establishing a proven biological link to their relatives
ultimately enhance their chance of a successful application
for immigration. Fairfax Identity Laboratories provides individualized
testing services that meet the guidelines and requirements
specified by embassies, consulates and the US Office of Immigration
and Naturalization Services. Identity testing in cases involving
immigration may include answering questions of paternity,
maternity, and sibling relationships).
